A health specialist is a health professional who specializes in assessing and analyzing personal health and fitness within an environment and recommending new processes or solutions to improve the health of the citizens in that environment through awareness of interventions to promote good health, diet and exercise. Health Specialist work in the public and private sector with individuals, organizations, and government bodies to assess people’s general health and discover the conditions that can affect health. With a wide range of health effects, environments, and methods for analyzing and treating these effects, health specialists can choose to focus on their own specialty within health, fitness, and wellness.

Course Overview

This 6-week course will include an introduction to the intersection of behavior analysis and health coaching, comparing methodologies, approaches, applications, ethical considerations, and scope of practice. Each weekly course will include an interactive lecture in which you will have access to the PowerPoint slides, an in-class assignment, and mini written assignment due at the beginning of the following class. At the end of the course sequence and contingent upon passing assignments and quizzes, the participant will be eligible to receive the TeamABA Health Specialist Certificate along with 15 Total BACB CEUs and other credits from continuing education certification bodies to be announced

Core Competencies

At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the definition of a health coach

  • Identify health coaching strategies related to nutrition

  • Identify health coaching strategies related to exercise

  • Create a wellness-based treatment plan that includes health coaching components

  • Implement motivational interviewing techniques with a client

  • Identify the process to become a health coach

  • Define the limitations and scope of practice of a BACB certification holder (BCBA, BCaBA, RBT) providing health coaching strategies

Meet Your Instructor

AJ Rodrigue is a firm believer in simply MOVING – in any way or form. AJ has been a lifelong athlete, from basketball as a five-year-old, track and field in college and now general fitness and strength training as an adult. For the past 11 years, AJ has been part of the Crossfit community – competing in several competitions and coaching adults and kids as a Level 2 trainer for 10 of those years. Using behavior analysis in the fitness community motived AJ to continue serving others in the most crucial part of health and well-being as an L1 Precision Nutrition Coach.

AJ’s journey with behavior analysis began 14 years ago when working in-home with a family with a child with autism. Since then, AJ obtained a bachelor’s in psychology and sociology from Loyola University New Orleans and went on to graduate from University of Houston Clear Lake with a masters in behavior analysis. AJ is a licensed and board-certified behavior analyst in Houston, Texas. She enjoys spending time with her 3 kids and husband and researching and presenting nationally on the maternal mental health of professional women.

Edward Poindexter is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with 20 years of clinical practice and 8 years in private practice as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Guardian Primary Care Services Family Practice serving the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. 

Edward is a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) comprised of nationally recognized Nurse Practitioner leaders who have made outstanding contributions to health policy, clinical practice or research. 

Of the over 116,000 members of AANP there are only 874 Fellows. He led a National Patient and Family Engagement initiative for 26 Hospital Networks and over 4,000 hospitals nationwide where under his leadership the Patient and Family Engagement National Network increased from 75 to over 200 network participants, representing 25,259 core members; 194,846 extended members; and 230,715 contacts.

  • The course is 6 consecutive weeks starting Wednesday April 4th and ending Wednesday May 11, 2023

  • Live lectures on course marterial will be held every Wednesday from 7 pm - 9 pm EST. Lectures will be recorded for view at anytime in the student portal. There is NO REQUIREMENT to attend the live lecutures

  • There will be 15 total BACB© CEUs: (2) Supervision, (1.5) Ethics, (11.5) Learning; upon completion of the course without final compentency testing

  • There are two options to register for the course: (1) Early Bird Registration is $499.00; (2) An installment plan of 2 payments of $299.50 with the final installment due by March 22, 2023. Early Bird Registration ends February 28, 2023 or at maximum capacity of 20 students. The regualr price and installment plan price is $599.00

  • Full refunds are available from the time of registration to the end of the first week of class, Wednesday, April 11, 2023
